Inside LHSC
Day Surgery

Project Overview

In partnership with London Health Sciences Centre and Red Rhino, Hidden Z was invited inside the operating room to document a patient’s journey through a total hip arthroplasty for an Inside LHSC feature highlighting the care, coordination, and expertise behind more than 10,000 day surgeries performed at LHSC each year.

This project went beyond the procedure itself to focus on the people and the process.

The Challenge

Surgical photography demands precision, discretion, and trust. Our challenge was to visually tell a complex medical story in a way that felt accessible and human, without losing the technical rigour or respect required in a clinical environment.

We needed to capture each stage of the journey clearly, while keeping the patient experience at the center of the narrative.

Our Approach

Working closely with LHSC clinicians and the Red Rhino team, we approached the shoot as a documentary, unobtrusive, detail-driven, and grounded in real moments. Careful lighting, composition, and timing, from pre-op preparation to post-procedure care, allowed us to focus on clarity, empathy, and visual continuity.

The Result

The final image set brought readers into the full process of a day surgery. The photography supported LHSC’s broader storytelling goals, reinforcing transparency, trust, and the scale of impact their surgical teams deliver every year.

It’s healthcare narratives grounded in real experience.
