Code for Canada
Branding
Project Overview
The Code for Canada brand refresh was designed to bring greater clarity, consistency, and cohesion to an organization doing meaningful work at a national scale. The goal was not to reinvent the brand, but to evolve it in a way that better reflected Code for Canada’s mission, values, and real-world impact, while ensuring the system could scale sustainably over time.
At its core, the project focused on strengthening how Code for Canada shows up across all visual touch points from print to digital and social. The refreshed brand needed to feel approachable and accessible, while maintaining the professionalism and credibility expected of a trusted public-interest organization. The result is a more flexible, human-centred identity that supports deeper engagement with a diverse audience base.

Visual Design System
The visual design system was built around a modular node structure that reflects how Code for Canada works in practice. Each node represents a stage in the organization’s process, from ideation and planning through iteration and the development of real-world products and solutions.
Beyond process, the system also captures the human side of the work. Interconnected nodes symbolize collaboration between teams, partners, and the public, reinforcing the idea that progress is created through shared effort and connection.
As the system expands, the nodes move outward to represent impact, illustrating how Code for Canada’s work drives change and helps move communities forward. Designed to be flexible and scalable, the system allows the brand to adapt across digital and print applications while maintaining a clear, cohesive visual language grounded in purpose and progress.
The refreshed logo builds on the essence of Code for Canada’s old mark, preserving familiarity while evolving it to align with the new visual system. The form was refined to integrate seamlessly with the node-based language developed for the broader identity, allowing the logo to feel like a natural extension of the system rather than a standalone element.
The result is a mark that balances continuity and progress, maintaining recognition while reinforcing the collaborative, process-driven nature of Code for Canada’s work.

Final Result
This project was built around close collaboration with Code for Canada’s in-house design team. Rather than operating as an external handoff, Hidden Z provided creative leadership, strategic direction, and mentorship, working side-by-side with internal designers to shape a unified vision.
The completed work provided Code for Canada with a stronger, more adaptable brand system, including:
Updated brand guidelines outlining visual identity, voice, and messaging principles
A refreshed homepage design demonstrating the evolved brand in action
New and updated website design patterns built in Figma and implemented in Craft CMS
A suite of marketing and communications materials, including slide templates, social graphics, Zoom backgrounds, business cards, postcards, one-pagers, and event signage
Together, these deliverables form a cohesive system that supports consistency while allowing the brand to grow and evolve.
