Fanatics Sportsbook Bet on Pop Culture and Won – The Z List

It’s hard to avoid sports betting ads right now. Since the 2018 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down the federal ban on sports wagering, the category has flooded feeds, broadcasts, and billboards with aggressive offers and high-energy messaging. The result? Attention fatigue. When everyone is shouting, standing out requires a different play.

But this year, one spot stood out. Not because it was louder, but because it was smarter.

Instead of targeting seasoned bettors with odds boosts and promo codes, Fanatics Sportsbook shifted its focus to the culture surrounding sports. The ad speaks to people who follow headlines, memes, and pop culture moments just as closely as game stats. It broadens the audience beyond hardcore gamblers and reframes betting as part of larger entertainment.

The spot leans into Kendall Jenner’s public persona and plays with the internet’s long-running “Kardashian Kurse” meme — the idea that athletes’ performance dips when linked to a Kardashian. Rather than ignore the joke, the brand embraces it. Kendall appears self-aware and in on the punchline, creating a subtle redemption arc that contrasts sharply with her much-criticized Pepsi commercial from 2017.

Fanatics took a different route, and it paid off. Fox Business reports that Fanatics Betting & Gaming CEO Matt King said the campaign has “exceeded our expectations,” noting, “We’ve seen a big spike in downloads, and we’re seeing that accelerate as we get closer to the game.” (Fox Business, 2026).

Most sportsbook ads are aggressive, performance-driven, and traditionally male-coded. The tone is conversational and narrative-led. It doesn’t assume you’re already betting, and it invites you into the cultural conversation first.

This spot demonstrates a key strategic insight: differentiation doesn’t always come from bigger claims or louder messaging. Sometimes, the smartest bet is telling a story people already want to be part of.
